Blonde Hair Maintenance with German Chamomile Essential Oil
Blonde hair is usually the embodiment of ethereal and delicate beauty. It is often the color that many women dream of and often quite difficult to get.
Only 2% of the world population has natural blonde hair, this being the least common hair color. You can therefore imagine how many women have to bleach it and color it to maintain beautiful, golden strands.
Blonde hair may vary from platinum and ash to dark golden blonde. Whether it’s natural or bleached and colored, the lighter the hair color the more sensitive it is. Light hair contains very little melanin. This one is responsible for UV and pollution protection.
Luckily, there are lots of natural active ingredients out there. They can help you obtain and maintain that natural blonde hair brightness.
For darker hairs it is a bit difficult to switch to light colors, which should be done gradually. But once attained, you may find it quite easy to maintain.
One of the best natural active ingredients for golden highlights is German Chamomile essential oil.
- It illuminates and enhances golden highlights.
- It nourishes dry or damaged hair.
- The essence also protects the hair against daily styling products and heat based tools.
- The oil leaves the hair smooth and shiny.
- The hair is always easier to brush after washing or treating it with Chamomile.
- German chamomile improves oily hair and scalp too.
- It doesn’t remove melanin from the hair as bleach would do. It is too gentle for that. Instead it lightens it up and maintains the existent color.
How does it work? German Chamomile’s yellow pigment will stick to your hair cuticles. They’ll also mix in with your hair color. It will then create intense reflections while out in the sun.
It can create lightening optical effects even on light brown colors. On darker hair colors, the yellow pigment of German Chamomile essential oil can’t really be seen. The other darker pigments are too strong and inhibit any sun reflections.
Only the German species of chamomile can lighten up the hair color. The Roman version is more astringent, which is always helpful for oily scalp.
It is well-known the fact that more active ingredients give a better result than one. You can mix the essential oil with Lemon oil, lemon juice or honey. Add in some light textured and clear or yellow colored carriers.
These are all ingredients that help a sensitive blonde hair maintain its golden reflections and color. Carrier oils need to be clear or yellow colored to avoid adding strange hues to your blonde hair.
Why use carrier (vegetable) oils? They can nourish and protect the hair from dehydration and dryness. They can also enhance the hair’s natural shininess.
To maintain the blonde hair bright and shiny, with no other brassy hues, you need to adapt your hair care. You need to use special shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Next, we will see why.
1) The Shampoo Phase of Blonde Hair
This is basically the first and most important phase of blonde hair care. In order to avoid the loss of your hair’s radiance you need to use special, gentle shampoos for blonde hair.
It needs to contain lots of antioxidants that’ll remove other products’ residues. They will also strengthen the cuticles of the hair and help it protect itself better from the sun’s damage.
Many other sources recommend the use of purple tinted shampoos for blonde hair. They’re used to maintain the color balanced and prevent any brassy or golden hues until your next dye.
Make sure you add German Chamomile essential oil into your natural shampoo. You can add up to 30 drops per 100 ml (3.38 fl. Oz). You could also make your own natural shampoo and customize it as you wish.
2) The Conditioning Phase of Blonde Hair
This phase is important for the hair cuticles to seal in the moisture and nutrients from the conditioner. I recommend adding some Chamomile essential oil once again. That will ensure a stronger hair and your summery gold reflections will shine brighter too.
3) The Styling Phase of Blonde Hair
Commercial hair styling products are not gentle at all. They use lots of synthetic ingredients that give an immediate result without actually doing any good to the hair itself.
Some of them may even sensitize the hair cuticles and cause them to stop retaining moisture and nutrients. The same goes for all the heat tools for hair curling or straightening.
If you like to style or strengthen your hair regularly, then you should use German Chamomile essential oil in a spray mist. You can apply it all over the hair, including the roots right after drying it out.
If you must, and I know it’s usually a must, dry your hair with cold air at a distance of 15 cm (5.90 inches). Scientists have discovered that that distance does the least possible damage. I will give you a simple spray mist recipe in the following part of this post.
4) Intense Nourishment for Blonde Hair
This phase right here is as important as any. You can give your hair all the nutrients it needs to regenerate and grow healthier and stronger. You can thus maintain it shiny, elastic and hydrated.
Apply nourishing masks with German Chamomile essential oil. They will enhance the golden color of your tresses.
This part is where you can use honey and carrier oils, as well as Lemon essential oil and juice to enhance your blonde color. Try to stay with this sort of mask on for at least one hour and use a shower cap to preserve the heat inside.
Heat opens up the pores and cuticles and the hair can take in more of what it needs. Make sure you rinse your hair well and it won’t look greasy afterwards.
Use only clear or yellow colored and light textured vegetable oils (carriers). Because blond hair is fragile you also need light carriers so they don’t weigh down on your hair.
The best carrier oils are Coconut, Sweet Almond oil, Sesame, Hazelnut, Macadamia, Jojoba, etc. These will not tint in any way your existing blonde color.
5) UV Protection for Blonde Hair
Because blonde hair contains very little melanin, the UV can penetrate faster and deeper into the hair and do more damage. It can dry it out and cause split ends.
The sun can also ruin your beautiful color, especially if it’s professionally obtained. The sun can indeed lighten up your hair but it can also damage it and cause premature hair aging.
Throughout summer it is best to use SPF on your hair just as you’d do on your face. Sesame oil has a very good natural SPF and you should incorporate it in your masks as well as in protection serums.
German Chamomile essential oil is not phototoxic. Thus, you can add a few drops in your protective serum also. Phototoxic oils usually cause serious sun reactions. They can be irritation, dryness, itching sensations, etc.
6) Special Hair Care at the Pool
The chlorine in the water pool may tint your blonde hair with green hues. Dry hair tends to soak in a lot of water. One trick would be to wet your hair and soak it with pure, bottled water before going into the pool.
You should then apply a protecting oil on it. Thus, you’ll create a barrier between the hair cuticles and the chlorine or the salt water.

A Few Tips for the Upkeep of Blonde Hair
- Add lemon juice to your rinsing water and stay out in the sun for a few hours. Your color will lighten up really fast.
- Try to get your hair roots done every 4 – 6 weeks to avoid an uneven look starting with the roots.
- Trim your ends regularly to prevent the damaging of more of the usual hair length. Split ends are able to continue splitting their way up to the roots.
- Never mix honey with lemon juice. The latter will prevent the peroxide to activate and release properly on your hair and there will be no lightening effect.
- Balance your blonde hues with purple shampoo if need be.
In the end, German Chamomile essential oils is one of the best active ingredients for blonde hair. It can help you preserve that summery shimmer and reflections. But it can also help you brighten your hair color if it’s darker.
Just remember that if you have really dark hair, it will be harder to get the golden reflections just with the oil.
