Best Essential Oils for Energy (Pros & Cons, and Studies)

When you’re tired, you can’t really focus or concentrate on anything. Being tired means you lack the energy to do things you have to do or would like to do.

Our modern-day lifestyle kind of makes sure we stay tired and busy all the time.

The sleeping hours are scarce and often not restful enough. We worry a lot, we don’t exercise enough, we eat chaotically and we make bad food choices, etc. All these can affect the quality of sleep and life, in general.

The body needs its sleeping hours to recover and rest. The body also needs a good source of energy coming from the foods we eat.

We need to keep our bodies toned too, so it can function at full capacity. Plus, we also need to keep our stress levels under control, or we risk getting ill more often.

How many people can actually take care of all these aspects of their lives? Sadly, not enough. Here come the little natural helpers called essential oils.

Essential Oils for Energy (Recipes)

How Can Essential Oils for Energy Act and Affect the Body

Why do we turn to essential oils and Aromatherapy to feel better? We do that because it works.

With their scent alone, essential oils can uplift the mood almost instantly. Although the action mechanisms are not entirely known, the way they work is not a mystery either.

Essential oils are plant extracts (very concentrated!). Since ancient times, they’ve been known for their health and beauty benefits.

Plants are a constant source for developing new drugs and treatments all the time. Morphine was developed from poppy seeds and aspirin from the willow tree.

As for the chemical composition, each plant gives a different essence. Each oil acts differently on the body and mind, though many have similar effects. It’s the way they get there that’s different.

For example, on the way to improving digestion, an essential oil may also stimulate the kidneys. It can also help to kill harmful gut bacteria.

An essential oil is made up of very small aromatic molecules. These molecules are volatile, which makes the oil fragrant and easy to evaporate. Being volatile helps the oils reach and impact our brains very fast.

The oil molecules are very active. Once they’re inhaled, they pass the nose and the blood-brain barrier.

Some of the molecules can mimic the action of certain hormones. Thus, an essence can be cortisone or estrogen-like. This means that by inhaling those oils, the body will start acting in a certain way.

Cortisone-like oils can help the immune system decrease inflammation inside the body. Fortunately, they don’t have the same side effects as the real cortisone.

You can use essential oils for energy, fatigue, stress, alertness, etc. They can benefit not only your mood but also your health.

They are:

  • Anti-inflammatory,
  • Antibacterial and antiviral,
  • Immunomodulatory (boost the immune system),
  • Circulatory (improve circulation),
  • Antioxidant (counter the damaging effects of the free radicals),
  • Uplifting and refreshing (stimulants),
  • Anti-anxiety,
  • Relaxant (sedative),
  • Etc.

Therefore, some of the best essential oils for energy can:

  • Increase alertness, improve focus and mental clarity.
  • Decrease the feeling of having too much to do.
  • Stimulate vitality.
  • Calm and soothe the nervous system.
  • Relieve tension from the muscles and help them relax.
  • Prevent oxidative damage to the muscles.
  • Reduce the feeling of stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
  • Help your mind and body to wake up.
  • Etc.

A test on piglets showed that essential oils mixed with food can:

  • Strengthen the immune system.
  • Boost digestion.
  • Kill some bad bacteria in the gut.
  • Increase the energy levels.

Another study, performed on swimming rats this time, showed that:

  • The inhalation of certain essential oils can relieve exercise-induced fatigue and physical exhaustion.
  • A mixture of aromatic oils can prevent the formation and accumulation of lactic acid and other metabolites.
  • An essential oil mixture can also protect the cells from the damage of free radicals after exercising. This is mostly due to their strong antioxidant effect.

This antifatigue effect needs more clarifying. As per the study, these findings need more studying at a molecular and cellular level.

What essential oils are good for positive energy? What are the best oils for an energy boost? What essential oils are good to wake you up? The answer to all these questions is:

  • This essential oil can also help you see things clearer (mental clarity).
  • Research shows that Peppermint oil improved the ability to draw in more air. It also improved the air capacity in the lungs. These two effects may help deliver more oxygen to the brain and tissue. This would result in an improved continuing physical performance.

  • If you suffer from asthma or seizures, you should avoid it. Or, you should at least, talk to a doctor first. It may trigger seizures.

These are some of the best essential oils that help with focus and concentration. They have been proven to help with memory and to help you stay focused on a task. This article speaks in more detail about this matter, which is a very common problem.

The ones I just mentioned are among the best essential oils for focus and energy. Pick whichever oil suits your needs best, at the right time.

We all have the tendency to leave things for tomorrow. Unfortunately, there are no essential oils that can help with procrastination.

It all depends on you. It depends on how motivated you are to do something. Sometimes, all you need to do is just get up and do it, without thinking about it too much.

At best, once you get yourself motivated, an essential oil may improve your mood and make you more alert and receptive. I’d say it’s enough to help you get through with the plan and get things done.

How to Use Essential Oils for Energy and Recipes

Aromatic essences are concentrated plant liquids. This means that, if you want to avoid side effects, they need to be used in a certain way.

The safest way to use an essential oil for energy is to dilute it. But, it also depends on the way you need or you want to use it.

Sometimes, you find yourself needing a little pick-me-up on the go. What do you do then? You take a whiff out of a roll-on blend, for instance.

What if you have guests and need to finish cleaning up? Then, the best thing to do is to diffuse your oils. That way, they’ll give you the boost you need to get things done. But they will also make the house smell great and inviting.

Thus, you can use your essential oils for energy, alertness, stress and focus as follows:

  • Massage or topical application.

Mix 3 – 25 drops of a stimulant essential oil in an Oz (30ml) carrier oil. The amount depends on how concentrated you want the fragrance. You should always pick carriers with a neutral smell, so they don’t interfere with your desired fragrance.

Blends can be done in a roll-on bottle, so you can take them with you. It’s great if you want to smell the aromas when you’re not at home.

Where do you put essential oils for energy? The best places are the pulse points: wrists, neck, back of the ears, etc. They can keep the aroma “alive” for a longer time.

You can also take aromatic baths (whole body or foot baths). Always mix your oils with some salt first. That’ll help them disperse into the water and spread evenly, instead of pooling.

  • Inhalation or diffusion.

Inhalation can be done directly from the bottle or from a diffuser. The latter refers to using a special aroma device that diffuses the oil molecules throughout a room. They’re called essential oil diffusers and they use many different technologies.

Depending on the device, you can diffuse 2 – 5 drops of an essential oil or a blend.

The best diffusion is done with the window(s) open, to avoid air saturation. This leads to headaches, migraines, nausea, poisoning, etc.

You should also keep the device on for only 20 – 30 minutes, every 2 hours or more. Here’s a beginner’s guide to a proper Aromatherapy diffusion.

Essential Oils for Energy (Natural Remedies)

Essential Oil Blends for Energy and More

When it comes to blending, things are more pleasant in practice than in theory. You can mix and match up to 5 essential oils to create a scent you love.

For energy or to relieve stress, tiredness, etc., some of the best blends should contain:

  • 2 – 3 stimulant essential oils.
  • 1 balancing essential oil.
  • 1 relaxing essential oil.

Some essences evaporate faster than others, which makes the blend more interesting. You can create a balancing oil recipe for energy by taking into account the notes of each essence.

Essential oils have different fragrance notes (like perfumes). Read more about scents and aromatic oil perfumes here.

So, here are some blends for more energy. Feel free to replace or subtract some essences, if you feel like they’re not needed.

Essential Oil Diffuser Blend for Energy

You’ll need:

  • Peppermint essential oil: 6 drops
  • Orange essential oil: 10 drops
  • Rosemary essential oil: 5 drops
  • Clove essential oil: 3 drops

Mix these oils together in a dark colored glass bottle. Use 2 – 3 drops to diffuse in a well-ventilated room.

Good Morning! Aromatherapy Blend

You’ll need:

  • Orange essential oil: 5 drops
  • Black Spruce essential oil: 5 drops
  • Rosemary essential oil: 5 drops
  • Grapefruit essential oil: 8 drops
  • Sweet Almond oil: 10 ml roll-on bottle

Give the blend a good shake before each use. Apply a small amount on your wrists and inhale deeply for a few minutes. Try to relax and clear your mind of any thoughts.

Relieve Tension & Fatigue Blend Recipe (Foot Soak)

You’ll need:

  • Eucalyptus essential oil: 1 drop
  • Sweet Orange essential oil: 2 drops
  • Cinnamon essential oil: 2 drops
  • Salt
  • Basin with warm water

Mix the oils with the salt and add it to your water. Soak your feet in it after a day’s work and inhale the scents deeply. The mixture will help you relax, give you new energy and also relieve the tension and pain from the feet.

Many people want to know which essential oil is best for fatigue. The truth is there is no one single oil that can help with fatigue or tiredness.

You can choose from a whole list, as I showed you above. This choice is also personal because you’ll like what you’ll like. Don’t be afraid to experiment with Aromatherapy scents.

When it comes to buying them, they can be from anywhere you like. If you have a favorite brand like so many do (doTERRA, YL, etc.), you can go for their essential oils for energy. The important thing is to trust the seller.

They should be able to offer you (free of charge, of course) access to the GC/MS report. This is the quality report of each oil, where you’ll see how it was extracted and what it contains.

Tips for a More Energetic You!

Essential oils can’t help with all the physiological processes inside the body. They can give them a boost, but there are certain things you can do to help your body work at full capacity.

Here are a few tips to help you maintain good levels of energy throughout the day:

  • The first thing to do is to watch your diet. Too much sugar causes inflammation in the body, which overexerts the immune system.
  • Keep an active life and exercise regularly. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to work (if possible), etc. Also, weight-lifting is a great way to build more muscle. All these things keep your body active and working properly. Exercise improves circulation, heart health, and metabolism, among others.
  • Drink plenty of water every day.
  • Eat small meals and do so slowly, until you feel full and then stop. That means that’s how much your body needed at that time. Try to make an eating schedule to create new, healthy habits. Your body will slowly get used to the schedule and won’t start asking for snacks until it’s time.
  • Take power naps (if possible). 10 – 20 minutes are enough to energize your body and help you get focused again.
  • Make sure you get enough sleep every night. Try Aromatherapy oils for sleeping, if you have problems falling asleep.

Aromatherapy can help you get in a better mood and feel more energetic. But you have to help your body too. That can be done by creating new, healthy lifestyle and eating habits.

Food is our main source of energy, and obviously, it matters what we eat. But it also matters how much we sleep, exercise, and so on.

Using essential oils for energy works very simple and fast. Once you inhale an essence, you’ll experience its benefits in a matter of seconds. Make sure you read about the oil’s pros and cons, so you can use it safely.

What essential oil do you use for more energy or to relieve fatigue and tiredness? How did you find out about its benefits?
