Daily Skin Care Routine for Men

Face & Body Daily Skin Care Routine for Men (Easy Steps and Tips)

Before I give you all the details and steps to follow, you should know why skin care is important. Scientists have proved the fact that daily moisturizers can delay the aging effects.

Now, as a man you might not give it as much importance now as women do. But think of all the others you know your age that will soon start showing wrinkles and you won’t if you care for your skin!

Depending on how much you care about the way your skin looks, you can go the simple way or the more “in-depth” way. I’m talking about more or less skin care to prevent looking older before time.

The following steps will contain all the necessary details to understand what you’re doing. However, if you are not the type to spend more than 10 minutes in front of the bathroom mirror, I’ll help you with a few tips. These tips will shorten the time you’d need to perform all the routine.

Most of them will involve the making of natural homemade lotions. The most important thing is to use natural ingredients like essential and vegetable oils. They will feed your skin every single essential acid and mineral it needs.

That will help your skin strengthen its natural protective barrier and prevent infections. Vegetable oils are moisturizers and essential oils are active ingredients with “super powers”. They will also maintain your skin firm, elastic and looking more radiant.

First Step: Face Cleansing

The skin is there to protect all our vital organs from external damaging factors. The air around us is full of germs, bacteria and viruses of all kinds. There are millions that live on the human skin. However, they can harm the skin if there’s a weakened immune system. They can also harm it if the protective barrier of the skin is disrupted.

The immune system can be weakened with antibiotics or other drugs. It can also be weakened by stress, pollution and the lack of sleep. The protective barrier of the skin is usually disrupted when harsh chemicals are used to clean it.

Commercial soaps and lotions are very harsh to the skin, no matter what they promise. When you use them on your face, they will strip the skin of its natural sebum (oil). The sebum protects the skin from infections and irritations.

Once the sebum is no longer there, the skin becomes more vulnerable. That’s also when the body thinks it’s time to produce more oil. And that’s how the pores get clogged and certain viruses start thriving, causing acne.

A daily skin care routine for men should include face cleansing twice a day (morning and night). That way you’ll remove all impurities and allow it to breathe and absorb the nutrients you’ll feed it afterwards.

How to do it correctly:

First, you should moist your face with warm water to open up the pores. Then, apply a small quantity of a homemade blend for the cleansing of your face. Use circular motions to remove excess sebum and dirt.

Cleansing lotion idea:

  • Aloe Vera gel: 1 Oz (30 ml)
  • Rosehip seed oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Cypress essential oil: 6 drops

Keep this blend stored in an airtight container and use it within 4 – 6 weeks. Keep it stored in a cool, dark and dry place. If you keep it in the fridge, I suggest you warm the quantity you take out between your palms and then apply on your face.

A cold cleansing lotion will cause the pores to shrink and close. You’ll want to do that only after you’ve washed your face. So, when you’re ready just rinse off with cold water and tap the face dry with a bit of paper towel. The paper towel is not reusable, so using it that one time only is sanitary. That way you’ll avoid putting germs back on your face.

Fast steps towards a daily skin care routine for men:
  1. Moist the face with warm water.
  2. Pump out a small quantity (dime size) of natural cleansing lotion.
  3. Rub it in your palms and apply on the face. Use circular motions to remove dirt and excess sebum.
  4. Rinse off with colder water and tap dry with paper towel.

Body Cleansing

The rest of your body needs a gentle care also. This means you’ll have to stop using commercial shower gels when you take a bath or a shower. You can buy neutral, base liquid soap from Aromatherapy stores and add essential oils in it.

For instance, for a 2 Oz. neutral base soap you can add a teaspoon of Avocado or Sweet Almond oil and mix very gently. You don’t want the lather to burst out of the recipient. Over this mixture you can add a total of 30 drops of essential oil. It can be Orange, Lemon, Cedarwood, or Patchouli, or all of them if you like.

This shower lotion will energize your body and mind, and will deeply clean and nourish your skin. You’ll get the same result if you use homemade solid soaps. They are made with lots of care and natural vegetable oils and butters that are gentler for the skin.

Second Step: Moisturizing

What is it and why do you need it? As an important part of a daily skin care routine for men, moisturizing is the act of applying moisturizers to the skin. Your skin needs it as an extra helping hand to cope with dehydration or the loss of collagen.

The skin starts to produce less collagen and elastin with each passing year. It’s a natural process that we can fortunately correct. Collagen and elastin are proteins that maintain the skin firm, elastic and hydrated.

A moisturizer is a fatty lotion that, once applied on the skin, prevents water loss. It basically traps the water inside the skin cells. That’s how the skin can look refreshed and plump. The best natural moisturizers are vegetable oils. They contain lots of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants that the skin can use.

There are over a hundred different types of vegetable oils out there. Even though, in theory, they’re all good moisturizers, it is important to you use the right one for your skin type.

Normal, oily, and combination, or dry and sensitive, these are all skin types. In case you don’t know yours, I will help you find out what type of skin you have in the next chapter.

How to do it correctly:

Keep a bottle of vegetable oil close by and use it after each cleansing. If your face is usually oily throughout the day, I suggest you use oils like:

  • Macadamia
  • Hazelnut
  • Grapeseed
  • Hemp
  • Rosehip Seed
  • Watermelon

They are all light oils that penetrate the skin deep, regulating its sebum production. They don’t clog the pores either.

If your face is rather normal (not oily but not dry either), I recommend using:

  • Sweet Almond
  • Argan
  • Coconut
  • Borage

For dry skin I recommend using thick oils like Avocado and Jojoba. The latter is actually a liquid wax.

Apply 2 – 3 drops of this oil on your palms and rub it a few seconds until it’s warm. You can then apply the oil all over the face and neck. You can add some essential oils too. They usually make the blend more potent because they have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Oak Moss

Here are a few recommended essential oils in a daily skin care routine for men:

  • Vetiver
  • Lavender
  • Black Pepper
  • Sandalwood
  • Oak Moss
  • Ginger
  • Cedarwood
  • Anise
  • Cinnamon
  • Pine
  • Sage
  • Vanilla

Tip 1:

Keep a bottle of vegetable oil in your bathroom. Apply as much as necessary all over the body right before you dry yourself with the towel. That’s a good moment to moisturize the face also. Fast and simple!

Tip 2:

If you want to avoid a laborious process with your face care, you can use a 2 in 1 lotion. I’m referring to a cleanser and a moisturizer in one lotion. Add equal parts of Aloe and a proper vegetable oil, plus a few essential oil drops. Use this to wash off impurities and hydrate the skin at the same time. You just pat dry the face after rinsing it and you’re done!

These simple steps, if done daily, will delay the effects of premature aging with many years.

Tip 3:

Don’t ever forget your hands! They’re the most exposed and need a lot of protection and moisture on a daily basis. Use rich lotions that contain Olive oil or Avocado Oil.

Extra Step #1: Exfoliating

Also known as scrubbing, this step is usually recommended every 3 or 4 weeks. Why? Because that’s when the skin cells usually regenerate. This process involves the peeling of old cells. A complete daily skin care routine for men must include an exfoliation from time to time.

A scrub’s purpose is to help eliminate all those dead skin cells to unclog the pores. After an exfoliation your skin will always look firmer and more radiant.

However, scrubbing in excess will only irritate your skin. The best moment for an exfoliation is right before shaving. This will help with the ingrown hairs that usually cause razor bumps and cuts.

Daily Skin Care Routine for Men

How to do it correctly:

  1. Choose a gentle exfoliator or make a simple one from baking soda, vegetable oil and a few drops of essential oil too.
  2. Moist your face and beard with warm water.
  3. Apply the lotion and scrub gently with circular movements.
  4. Leave it on for a few minutes so the hairs have time to soften.
  5. Add more vegetable oil on the beard and start shaving with a double blade razor.
  6. Rinse with warm water and pat dry afterwards.

Exfoliating Homemade Lotion:

You’ll need:

  • Avocado oil: 1 teaspoon
  • Baking soda or finely ground coffee: 1 teaspoon
  • Birch essential oil: 4 drops

This amount should be enough for one good use. You will not need any shaving lotion when you use this homemade recipe. Commercial lotions usually dry the skin and make it flake.

The above recipe will moisturize the skin on a deep level and help you shave easier and safer. If you want, once you’re done shaving, you can apply more moisturizer or leave it like that.

Extra Step #2: Sun Protection

UV rays are the number one cause for premature aging. Aging can be intrinsic – on the inside, and extrinsic – on the outside. Antioxidants help the body fight the free radicals that damage healthy skin cells. In time, too much sun exposure without protection will cause the skin and internal organs to sag and lose their elasticity.

Daily Skin Care Routine for Men

Like it or not, a daily skin care routine for men should also include sun protection.

To prevent intrinsic premature aging you must consume lots of fruits and vegetables and supplements. To prevent the extrinsic one, all you need to do is apply sun protection lotions. The best protection should have at least 30 SPF.

Among all the natural vegetable oils out there, Sesame oil is the best. The next one is Coconut oil. A mixture of the two plus Carrot seed essential oil will protect your skin from premature aging, burning and irritation.

Apply sun protection whenever you’re about to stay outside for longer than 20 – 30 minutes. Cover every bit of exposed skin and renew the protective sun lotion layer every few hours.

About Skin Types and Aromatherapy in Skin Care

This chapter is meant to help you diagnose your skin type correctly. I’ve given you the details on why each step in a daily skin care routine for men is important. I’m counting on the shorter version of each step to help you start it right away.

But why is it important to use the correct products for your skin type? It is important because each active ingredient is different and unique in its own way. Each provides certain nutrients that the skin needs.

Each oil is specialized in improving certain aspects of the skin. Failing to know the needs of your skin will lead to an unhappy looking skin. This “unhappiness” will reflect on its general aspect, which can be dull, irritated, acne-affected or dry, and so on.

There are 4 main skin types: normal, dry, sensitive and oily. But, because of the lifestyle and the products and diets each person uses, they’re often mixed.

For example, a dry skin may also be sensitive (reactive to certain products and ingredients). A dry or normal skin type can also have oily tendencies thus, resulting in a combination skin type. But let’s see what their characteristics are.

Skin Types

Normal skin type – This skin type is neither too oily nor dry. It does not have problems with acne, enlarged pores, or dry patches. Most vegetable oils are beneficial to this skin type. Even so, I recommend the use of oils with medium thickness like Sweet Almond, Sesame, and Coconut.

Dry skin type – This skin type feels tight and uncomfortable after each wash. It can easily get irritated. Because of that you have to use mild lotions and very nourishing oils. The best ones are Avocado, Olive, Castor or Jojoba.

Oily skin type – This skin type produces an excessive amount of sebum. While it is good for the elasticity and moisture of the skin, it is also very problematic. It’s always shiny, no matter the season and it suffers from acne. But even oily skin needs a proper hydration.

The good news is that certain light oils can regulate that sebum production and protect from most acne-causing bacteria. Especially when combined with powerful antibacterial essential oils. Recommended vegetable (carrier) oils are Hazelnut, Watermelon, Rosehip, Macadamia or Hemp.

Combination skin type – This skin type is a combination of dry or normal skin (extremities) and oily skin (on the T-zone). The T-zone is the forehead, nose and chin. This area is usually shiny and has enlarged pores, prone to acne. The same oils for an oily skin type are recommended here too.

Sensitive skin type – This skin type is very reactive to a lot of the stuff you put on it. You have to use simple lotions for its care. The less ingredients, the better! It can get irritated quite easily, it can flake or become dry, depending on what it is exposed to.

About Aromatherapy Active Ingredients

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to improve the aspect of the skin. It can also be used to treat or improve certain skin or health conditions.

Essential oils are aromatic essences that contain tens and hundreds of tiny molecules. These molecules can reach the brain, the blood and skin cells very fast. They all work in a perfect synergy and protect against bacteria, germs and viruses of all sorts.

Essential oils are volatile, meaning they evaporate fast. They can also catch fire! These aromatic essences are extracted by steam distillation from barks, roots, leaves, flowers and resins. They’re also very concentrated! This means they must always be diluted first before being applied to the skin.

Their best dilution is made with vegetable oils, aka carrier oils. These are extracted from the seeds, kernels and fatty portions of the fruits. They’re cold pressed, which means they’re full of essential fatty acids for the skin. Carrier oils are greasy on the skin, while essential oils aren’t!

Natural skin care is the best thing you could do for your skin! Not only will it nourish it and give you a fresh look all the time, but it will also delay premature aging signs. Who doesn’t want to look 30 when they’re 40, right?!

Daily skin care routine for men should be easy and quite straightforward. In this article I’ve given you its fast and easy steps so that you don’t have to spend too much time in front of the mirror.

Just make sure you know your skin type and its needs so you can use the proper ingredients. Luckily, Aromatherapy provides something useful for each type of skin problem. Don’t forget to use a moisturizer for the body as well!

    1. Hi Divyansh,

I would recommend using Aloe Vera gel first, to clean the face and tone it.
And then continue with an oil (simple or blend) to seal in moisture, nourish and protect the skin.

  1. hi
i started oil which is high in linoleic acid but it make my skin dry or flaky
so i mix with sweet almond oil
AM i doing correctely or not
    please tell me

    1. Regardless of the main oil you use, if it makes your skin flaky or dry, it is a good idea to mix it with another gentler one.
Sweet Almond, Avocado and Jojoba are great for dry skin.
      Take care!

    1. Almond oil is rather light and not very nourishing for dry skin.
Olive oil is much more nourishing, so you could try it alone for a few times, to see how it goes.

    1. Like I said, Olive oil is good for dry skin.
Other very nourishing oils for dry skin are the very thick ones too. E.g.: Wheat Germ, Avocado or butters like Shea, Cocoa, Mango, etc.
      I hope this is helpful.
