Best Essential Oils for Gout Relief

Aromatic oils make great natural remedies for pain and inflammation of the joints and ligaments. Their chemical composition is very complex and their volatile molecules very active.

Once they’re applied to the skin, those tiny active molecules will penetrate the skin fast. They will reach the painful area and the blood, clearing out infections.

Essential oils can be used for gout treatment because they have anti-inflammatory properties. They can inhibit the enzymes and receptors that cause inflammation and pain.

In the case of gout, the use of aromatic oils can eliminate the excess of uric acid (from kidneys). This acid crystalizes in and around the joints and start to poke around and cause pain.

The use of essential oils for gout can also numb the painful area, therefore act as mild sedatives. They also have detoxifying effects and stimulating properties. These essences can improve the blood circulation. That will deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the joints, maintaining them well lubricated.

Next, I will tell you more about four of the best essential oils that can soothe your gout pain.

1) Juniper Essential Oil

This aromatic essence is extracted from the fruits of the tree. It has long been used in urinary problems. Gout happens because of a bad functioning of the kidneys, when it produces too much uric acid. This acid goes straight into the blood, which is then taken to the joint, where it stops and crystallizes.

Essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil before topical application! They’re too concentrated for pure applications. They can cause irritations, burns and skin sensitization.

Carrier oils are fats extracted from kernels, seeds and pulp. They help disperse the tiny molecules of the essential oils. Doing it this way, you can use small amounts of essential oils on wider skin areas, and avoid irritation.

  • Massage lotions made with some of the best essential oils for gout can lead to a quick relief and an improved state of mind.

  • Other great ways of getting a quick pain relief are hot and cold compresses. Depending on the type of pain, you could use either one. Generally speaking, heat can help the oils penetrate the skin faster and soothe the pain as well.

  • Diffusing essential oils could also help, though it depends on the level of pain. For the best results you can simply combine all these methods.

  • Foot baths with 12 – 15 drops of an oil mixture can also offer relief and disinfect the painful area. Follow this bath soak with a lotion massage where you apply gentle movements. All that while inhaling from a beneficial blend of oils to help your mind relax.

Blends with essential oils for gout treatment should be applied every 15 – 20 minutes, or until the pain becomes bearable.

As to the type of carrier oils you can use for gout, there can be anything you have at hand. But the best ones would be those that have anti-inflammatory properties as well. I recommend Tamanu, Black seed, Olive and Neem oils.

Learn More about Gout, Its Symptoms and Causes

I’ve mentioned along the article that gout crisis are triggered by an excess of uric acid. This acid is a waste product from the kidneys. It contains dead or destroyed cells, plus certain degraded proteins, meat, fats, etc.

When the kidneys function properly, they regulate and eliminate any excess of uric acid. When they’re not functioning properly, that excess spills into the blood. It then locates in and around the joints. This acid crystallizes there and starts pushing into the fine tissue of the joint, causing inflammation and pain.

That’s when gout crises happen. The interesting thing about it is that each crisis is located in a different joint than before.

Gout usually starts in the joints and ligaments of the big toe. Afterwards, it may locate in the fingers, elbows, shoulders and even knees. In other words, all the joints can be affected by gout.

Gout can last somewhere between 3 – 10 days, and the pain can become more and more intense. If this pain is really intense, you must go to a doctor immediately.

Using essential oils for gout is a good complementary therapy. This means they can be used in parallel with drug prescriptions. Though, neither should interact one with each other.

Gout is basically an inflammation of the joints. It lasts for a certain period of time and comes back again, in a different joint. The condition causes severe pain and discomfort, and its cause lies in the health and the proper functioning of the kidneys.

Other causes of gout may be:

  • Diseases.
  • Genetics.
  • Drugs.
  • Obesity.
  • Food and alcohol excesses.

Aromatherapy for gout is not the only thing you can do to prevent further attacks or to soothe the existent one. You can take measures and make some changes in your lifestyle and diet to help your body relax and boost its vital processes.

Here are a few tips to help you create new and healthy habits from now on. Because using essential oils for gout could get you out of a crisis, but they can’t make it disappear forever. The following tips can also help you soothe any existent gout attacks.

  • During gout attacks, avoid consuming acidic foods, fat dairy, red meat, sea food, alcohol, etc.
