Best Essential Oils for Scars, with Pros and Cons

You probably know by now that the skin is the largest organ. It has many important tasks to perform daily. It can help eliminate carbon dioxide (toxic for the body) and breathe. It can also maintain the normal body temperature and protect the other organs.

The body has its priorities. When a tear or lesion occurs on the skin, the body treats it as an emergency. It starts producing fibers (collagen, elastin) and causes the migration and multiplication of cells.

They all cluster to the affected area to close the wound and stop the bleeding. They’re role is also to prevent bacteria from coming in.

In other words, a scar is the result of a chaotic arrangement between fibers and cells. Once the wound is closed, the body doesn’t consider it a threat anymore and moves on to other pressing matters. This is why the complete healing of a scar may take up to two years.

Unfortunately, the damaged skin cells will never completely recover their functions. This also explains the whiter appearance and lack of hair on a scar.

The seriousness of a scar can depend on:

  • Its origin or cause (cut, scratch, scrape, bite, surgery or burn).
  • The location (face, hands, belly, back, etc.).
  • Its dimensions and depth.

Depending on these factors, a scar can be more or less obvious and may take more or less time to heal.

Why Use Carriers and Essential Oils for Scars?

Both essential and carrier oils are liposoluble. This means they mix with other fats, thus they are attracted to the natural oil of the skin (sebum).

Once applied to the skin, they penetrate its layers very fast and continue until they reach the blood. Essential oils are not fat and don’t leave a fatty film on the skin.

Carrier oils are extracted from nuts and kernels. They contain fatty acids that leave a fatty film on the skin (and a sensation of hydration).

Most contain the same fatty acids like the sebum. But they also contain essential ones that the body can’t produce, yet needs. This leads to the regulation of the sebum production, the protection of the skin and its hydration.

The best essential oils to use for scars are those that speed up the scarring process. Those that help the tissue regenerate, protect against inflammation and infections.

Furthermore, let’s see some pros and cons. They are for those essential oils that are great for the treatment of scars.

1) Helichrysum (Immortelle) Essential Oil

If you’re wondering what essential oils are good for scars, then Helichrysum is it. It can successfully be used for acne scars and after surgery scars.

The Latin name is Helichrysum italicum and it’s important to know this name to buy the right type of oil. The oil is also called Immortelle because it doesn’t whither after being cut.

Essential Oils for Scars, Helichrysum oil

  • Helichrysum essential oil is great for scars! It has scarring and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • The oil contains many important molecules that aid in the process of tissue regeneration.
  • Helichrysum can protect against germs and bacteria. It can also limit the inflammatory response of the body.
  • Immortelle stimulates the synthesis of keratinocytes. It also limits the abnormal (chaotic) multiplication of skin cells too. Thus, the oil of Helichrysum is able to prevent hypertrophic or keloid scars.

  • The oil should not be used on children under the age of 6.
  • It is much too powerful and its smell is not too pleasant to be recommended for diffusion.
  • Immortelle essential oil is very expensive and it comes in very small recipients. Nonetheless, a few drops per blend will work great and last you a long time.

Why I like it:

Though it is expensive indeed, Helichrysum oil is worth the investment. No matter the domestic accident, it can help your skin heal fast and even.

The oil is also great for anti-aging treatment lotions, or the sun-damaged skin. Post-surgical or acne scars respond very well to this oil.

2) Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Pelargonium graveolens/roseum/asperum. You need this type of oil to enjoy all the beneficial effects it has on scars. Among Aromatherapists, Geranium essential oil is an aromatic treasure for the skin. It is among those essential oils that are really good for scars.

Essential Oils for Scars, Rose Geranium oil

  • Geranium oil accelerates the body’s response in the cicatrization process. It cleans the wound effectively and stops the bleeding.
  • The oil can boost the restructuring of the skin layer in an organized manner. Thus, it prevents the formation of ugly scars.
  • The oil also improves the blood flow in the affected area, speeding its healing. The best part about Geranium essential oil is that it regenerates the tissue without the multiplication of the skin cells.
  • Geranium helps the skin gain back its elasticity, tonus, texture and appearance. It also maintains the affected area hydrated.

  • The oil contains ketones. These substances can induce labor and they are also neurotoxic. This means Rose Geranium oil should not be used by pregnant women and people with seizures or even asthma. Consult a doctor before using this oil.
  • Make sure you read the specifications of the oil. It can be altered by some sellers or mixed with other geranium varieties. This variety is totally different from the Bourbon type.

Why I like it:

Geranium is one of the best essential oils for skin healing. This oil is great for acne scars and surgical scars. It is so because it’s a good tonic, astringent and anti-inflammatory.

Not only does it speed up the healing process, but it also does it beautifully. The appearance of scars becomes much more improved. Depending on the age of the scar, the depth and the location, the results may vary though.

3) Cistus Essential Oil

Cistus ladaniferus is another great essential oil for scars. It makes a great synergy with the above mentioned oils to face even the most delicate scars.

Essential Oils for Scars, Cistus oil

  • It’s a thicker oil that acts like a sort of glue for the skin cells.
  • Cistus oil improves the microcirculation of the epidermis, speeding up regeneration.
  • The oil can also help soften the scabs that form to protect the damaged skin.
  • Cistus is an especially great essential oil for surgical scars! In combination with Helichrysum essential oil, scars don’t really stand a chance.
  • It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Also, Cistus can stop the bleeding and tone up the damaged nerves of the skin.

  • The oil should not be used repeatedly and in large doses! Cistus essential oil can become toxic for the nervous system.
  • It also contains ketones (like Geranium). Therefore, it’s not recommended to pregnant women or people with seizures.
  • The oil is usually hard to find and expensive.
  • There are also many types of Cistus oils. The one I’m referring to is extracted from the white cistus flowers (cistus ladaniferus).
  • The type of oil rich in substances that help the skin regenerate and heal beautifully should come from Spain or Portugal. The Morocco varieties are better for antispasmodic effects and bronchitis.

Why I like it:

Cistus is a great essential oil to have around. It is so especially if you suffer from acne, and need a remedy that cleanses and regenerates the skin faster.

It can take ages until an acne scar fades away on its own. That’s why I like this oil, because it’s among the few best essential oils for acne scars for a reason. The oil is also a precious beauty ingredient that works great in anti-aging blends.

Other great essential oils for scars are:
  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Green Myrtle
  • Lavender
  • Patchouli
  • Rosemary ct. (chemotype) camphor
  • Rosemary ct. Verbenone
  • Sandalwood
  • Tea Tree
  • Wintergreen

Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin. They need to be diluted first in a carrier oil or other fatty or neutral environment. Salt, shower gel, milk, honey… are all good for the mixing of essential oils.

The best carrier oils for scars are (in order of importance):
  • Argan
  • Rosehip seed
  • Macadamia
  • Tamanu
  • Black Cumin
  • Calendula

They all possess skin healing and scarring properties. They also have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Though, they are a bit less concentrated than essential oils. That’s why they mix so well together!

How to Apply and Use Carriers and Essential Oils for Scars

The only best way to enjoy their skin healing abilities is through local/topical application. Make yourself a blend, shake and apply on the affected areas, three times a day.

Use gentle massage movements to improve the circulation. It’ll also promote faster absorption and speed up the tissue healing process.

For safety, you can apply a more concentrated blend (of 3% essential oils) in the first week. Then, continue with 2% dilution until the skin looks good again.

3% dilution means 18 drops of EO per Oz. carrier oil. 2% means 12 drops of EO per Oz. carrier.

How Long Does It Take to Heal a Scar Naturally?

I will repeat what I wrote a bit earlier. The healing and time of healing of a scar depends a lot on its location, depth and dimensions, and its cause.

Surgical scars for instance, they are usually the deepest and longest. They also need a lot of time for a complete healing and a more powerful combination of essential oils for scars. While acne scars are more superficial and need less time to clear out.

Also, depending on their age, certain scars may not fade away completely or improve with time. A scar can still be remedied if it’s as old as two years. Even so, after 6 months a scar starts to cement its appearance, making it a bit harder to fade away.

In other words, the faster you act the better results you’ll get.

Luckily, the main skin cells (keratinocytes) renew very often. They renew every 8 to 10 days, but this time frame is affected by the age and the environment of each person.

Other skin cells may take a month or more to renew. Usually, the best results start showing after a month, especially in the case of new scars.

Older scars may take between 3 – 12 months to show improvement. They need to go through more skin cell renewing cycles.

When using essential oils for scars or any other treatment, you need a lot of patience. You also need daily commitment. There is no faster way around it. Only if you act as quickly as possible can this process be sped up.

Essential Oils for Scars

A 5-Step Scar Treatment Regimen and Essential Oil Blend Recipes for Scars

Here we are finally to the treatment regimen. I propose the following 5 simple steps to take a proper care of your scars. Used regularly, you can improve their appearance dramatically.

Good practices make good habits. And good habits can only bring you happiness and self-contentment.

Step 1

The best treatment for scars starts with a thorough and correct cleansing. You can use a mild soap, ideally homemade and cold processed. Rinse abundantly with warm water.

Or you can simply spray the wound with a disinfecting hydrosol (floral water).

Hydrosols are the byproduct of distilling essential oils. They contain tiny trace amounts of essential oils. In hydrosols you’ll also find other minerals and vitamins that didn’t make it into the oil. They are mildly antibacterial and soothing.

Another good practice is to wash the damaged skin with Aloe Vera gel. It has a peeling effect and it can speed up the scarring process. Aloe Vera is also great for keloid and old scars.

Step 2

Apply an essential oil blend for scars as soon as possible. The sooner you take measures, the better for a proper skin healing. The body will release fibers and promote the migration of new skin cells in a more organized manner. Thus, you can prevent the formation of really ugly and thick crusts.

Step 3

Massage the damaged skin and scar daily, with each application. The effects of using essential oils for scars can be increased with a daily massage. Massage the scar and the skin around it at least two times a day, for one or two minutes.

A massage will improve the microcirculation underneath the skin. More blood means more nutrients and oxygen to the damaged tissue. That will help it regenerate faster. A massage can also drain the toxins out and relieve pain.

Step 4

Apply an essential oil blend, at least two times a day, to maintain the damaged skin moist enough. A good level of moisture will favor the scarring process.

Step 5

It is also important to protect your scars and wounds from the sun’s direct light. The skin will produce more melanin this way to protect itself from UV rays (free radicals). That happens because it’s more sensitive than the rest of the skin.

More melanin leads to brown spots that will also require your attention afterwards. Better to prevent than treat!

Essential Oil Blends and Synergies for Old and New Scars

With the above regimen, it’s time to get straight to action. You can use the following blend recipes or get inspiration to create your own. Take into consideration the 3 best essential oils for scars I gave you to get the best possible results.

Concentrated Scar Serum

You’ll need:

  • Argan oil: 1 Oz (30ml)
  • Helichrysum essential oil: 10 drops
  • Cistus essential oil: 10 drops
  • Lavender essential oil: 10 drops

Shake the blend well before each use. Apply a moderate amount on the damaged skin/scar. Use gentle massage movements on it and the skin around it for 1 or 2 minutes.

Blend Recipe for Surgical Scars

You’ll need:

  • Rosehip seed oil: 20 drops
  • Tamanu oil: 20 drops
  • Rose Geranium essential oil: 5 drops
  • Cistus essential oil: 5 drops
  • Helichrysum essential oil: 5 drops

Mix these oils together and apply on the scar 3 times a day, with very gentle massage movements. If the scar is too fresh and starts to ooze, don’t panic. It’s a natural response of the body.

You should consult your doctor and go for a draining. Take it all out of the way before continuing with your scar treatment regimen.

Continue the application for as long as it takes to get the good looks of your skin back. It may take up to a year of regular applications, depending on the severity of the wound/scar.

Good Practices to Promote Faster Scar Healing

To get the results you want, when it comes to treating scars, you need a lot of patience and perseverance. Here are a few good practices to use to make sure you’re doing everything for your skin.

  • Learn to make a habit out of massaging a new wound and the surrounding area. Use an essential oil blend for scars. Thus, the skin cells will be activated and the regeneration will be faster.
  • Learn to have patience and simply wait for the results to show.
  • Act as soon as you see a new scar. The longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to improve its appearance.
  • Take zinc supplements for a few weeks to aid the tissue regeneration.
  • Vitamin C is also great for skin as it can boost collagen production.
  • If the scar is really painful and it doesn’t go away in a 48 hours, you should go to a doctor. The risk of infection for fresh wounds is very high and you don’t want that kind of complication.
  • Avoid sun exposure with a scar you’re trying to heal.
  • Hydrate your skin after each bath or shower. That will keep it well prepared to face any new damage or lesions.

They say scars tell a lot about a person. They show much of his or her adventurous nature, but scars are not always very aesthetic. There is nothing wrong with wanting your skin to look great at all times. Luckily, we have really great natural beauty oils to use.

Essential oils for scars mix perfectly with carriers that have similar effects on the skin. Don’t forget to massage the damaged area and the skin around it to get the best possible results.

Also, in the case of improving scars you need a lot of patience. Simply keep at it for a few weeks and it’ll become a habit you won’t even notice anymore.
