Aging and Deep Wrinkles Formation, and the Way Essential Oils Can Help

Aging comes from the inside, as well as from outside damaging factors. The sun is the major cause for external skin aging. Aging refers to many changes that happen inside the skin.

Young skin has a dense collagen and elastin-rich composition. They help the skin cells stay together and face stretching, breaking, injury, etc. They also keep the skin plump and firm.

In time, the skin accumulates corneocytes. These, along with keratinocytes make the outermost layer of the skin. That accumulation causes the skin to look rough, dry and dull.

Also in time, the skin vasculature decreases and adds up to the process of aging. Skin vasculature refers to the blood vessels network underneath the skin. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells.

See the structure of the skin here.

Aging causes the collagen production to decrease and break down. The collagen then, together with elastin fibers, become fragmented and very disorganized.

In that chaos, less elastin and collagen means the weakening of the skin structure. This weakened structure is the perfect environment for wrinkle formation.

Deep wrinkles can be dynamic or static. Dynamic deep wrinkles are also known as expression wrinkles. They are located on the forehead, between the eyes and around the nose and mouth. Basically, everywhere there are muscles.

Over the years, facial muscle contraction causes paths that look like folds. Left neglected for too long, deep wrinkles can be hard to deal with.

Once these folds learn the path and the skin loses elasticity, they stay on the skin. On a young skin, facial expressions spring right back, leaving the skin smooth.

On a mature skin, they become static wrinkles. These are basically all the wrinkles and lines that show up on the skin when expressions are not formed.

Medical professionals often compare skin aging with the shrinking of a raisin. When a mature person loses weight, the skin doesn’t bounce back as it used to. The more weight one loses, the saggier the skin becomes.

With age comes bone atrophy too. It also changes the structure of the face. In which case, the skin needs to adjust. Deep wrinkles show up where muscles contract.

In theory, muscle toning can improve their aspect by increasing tonus. In practice though, trying to tone facial muscles may lead to wrinkle formation. The safest way to delay their formation is the use of moisturizers, regularly.

At the moment, there are several different methods of filling up deep facial wrinkles. They include:

  • The removal of sagging skin (surgically).
  • The injection of different types of fillers, with different results and lasting time.
  • Botox, hyaluronic acid, etc.
  • Laser resurfacing techniques.
  • And chemical methods.

Treatment usually depends on skin type, cause and the affected area. If you don’t want to undergo any surgical procedures or use injections, you can try natural remedies. Some of the best and most active anti-aging ingredients are essential oils.

How Can Essential Oils Help with Wrinkles?

Essential oils are natural potent plant extracts. They contain highly active molecules that can affect the skin in a beneficial way. These active molecules are great antioxidants. Some oils have a higher antioxidant power than others, but they all have it.

Antioxidants can counter the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals caused by UV light can break down and damage collagen and elastin. They are the two most important enzymes that keep the skin firm and elastic.

Essential oils can help with wrinkles because:

  • They’re antioxidant. They fight free radicals, thus, they slow down the damage to collagen and elastin. This leads to slowing down the process of skin aging and delaying premature aging too.
  • Aroma oils are also anti-inflammatory. Inflammation can also affect the integrity of the skin and collagen production.
  • They’re great antibacterial agents. Any one essential oil for deep wrinkles can protect from infections.
  • Many essential oils can also boost collagen and elastin production.
  • They can deliver certain nutrients to the skin.
  • Aromatic oils can also strengthen the defense mechanism of the skin.
  • Deep wrinkles aren’t the only thing oils can help with. Some essential oils are also great at dealing with age spots.

Essential oils don’t offer sunscreen protection, but a few carrier oils do. The highest SPF registered so far in carrier oils is 8, which is too low for powerful sunny days. The best carrier oils that can offer mild sun protection are Coconut and Olive.

Luckily, they’re also great moisturizers, with antibacterial and antioxidant properties. I’ll tell you more about the role of carrier oils in anti-aging skin care routines. But after I give you the pros and cons of some of the best essential oils for deep wrinkles.

How to Use Essential Oils for Deep Wrinkles

Essential oils are concentrated and powerful ingredients. Applied pure, they can irritate or sensitize the skin. Some of them can also burn it. So, the solution for a safe use is to mix them with carrier oils for all your topical applications.

The usual ratio for any facial blend/serum is 12 drops per Oz carrier oil. I suggest starting with a lower amount until you see how your skin behaves.

Always avoid the eye area when you apply a stronger blend. The skin there is much too sensitive and thin.

Today, the best way to prevent wrinkles and improve the appearance of deep wrinkles is either by surgery, injection or retinoids.

Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that can pass through all the layers of the skin. They are also related to vitamin A, which is oil soluble.

Carrier oils are fatty oils extracted from fatty portions of fruits (kernels, pulp and seeds). Some of them are very high in vitamin A (retinol).

Topical application of vitamin A improved the appearance of wrinkles in seniors. The vitamin was found useful at stimulating collagen production.

Other studies show that moisturizers reduce the appearance of fine lines almost immediately, by 15 – 20%. Specialists recommend daily use (topical) of retinol and retinoids to prevent wrinkle formation.

Which carrier oil is best for wrinkles, right?

The best ones are the highest in natural vitamin A. There are many that contain it, but the best concentration can be found in:

  • Argan
  • Apricot kernel
  • Carrot
  • Olive
  • Rosehip seed
  • Sweet Almond

Be careful though, some of them may clog the pores. Make sure you choose the right one for your skin type and specific problems. You can also check out my article on non-comedogenic carriers:

Carrier oils will cover large skin areas and help the essential oils disperse evenly. They will absorb into the skin through the pores and hair follicles.

The sebum of your skin (natural oil) is also a good absorbent. Some of them are really great at regulating the sebum production too.

Essential Oil Recipes for Deep Wrinkles

We’ve come a long way now. It’s time to put these oils to the test and try an anti-aging serum for your deep wrinkles.

Essential Oils Recipe for Forehead Wrinkles

You’ll need:

  • Rose essential oil: 4 drops
  • Rosewood essential oil: 4 drops
  • Cistus essential oil: 4 drops
  • Argan oil: 1 Oz (30ml)

Give this blend a good shake before each use and apply mornings and nights. Use a moderate amount only on the forehead or on the whole complexion, as you wish. Use circular movements and then upward movements to lift up the skin.

Essential Oils Recipe for Wrinkles around the Mouth

You’ll need:

  • Palmarosa essential oil: 3 drops
  • Frankincense essential oil: 6 drops
  • Rose essential oil: 3 drops
  • Rosehip seed oil: 1 Oz (30ml)

Mix all the oils together and give the blend a good shake before each use. This is usually done to activate all the molecules. Apply mornings and nights on the wrinkles around the mouth and nose. Use upward movements to counter the effects of gravity.

Essential Oils Recipe for Crow’s Feet

You’ll need:

  • Sweet Almond oil: ½ Oz (15 ml)
  • Frankincense essential oil: 1 drop

You can add up to 2 drops of Frankincense in this recipe, but you should start with one. The eye area is very sensitive and could react badly. Sweet Almond is among the best moisturizers to use for under eye problems.

Tips to Improve the Aspect of Deep Wrinkles

Sadly, we can’t prevent them from ever happening. But the aspect of deep wrinkles and fine lines can be improved. Their appearance can also be delayed, especially if the right ingredients are used.

There are also a few good practices/tips to keep in mind while doing so:

  • Always use the most gentle cleansers and makeup removers. Hydrosols can serve as tonic water and pure carriers can remove makeup gently.
  • Try to always wear sunscreen, no matter the season. The sun is the number one enemy of the skin.
  • If retinoid creams are too harsh for your skin, you can replace them with carriers rich in vitamin A. On a short period of time, the effect won’t be the same. But on a longer period of time, your wrinkles will improve.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  • Limit sun exposure.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. Water is not absorbed through the skin. At best, it can be trapped inside the cells with carrier oils. True hydration comes from the inside. But only after all the other organs have received enough to function. The skin is the last one to get water. That’s why you need to drink plenty, each day.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants.
  • Allow your body to get enough sleep, so the skin can regenerate and repair itself.
  • Diffuse Aromatherapy oils on a daily basis to relieve stress and anxiety.

Conclusion

Skin aging can be improved but fortunately, it can also be prevented. That is actually the best thing we could hope for. Natural remedies and moisturizers especially, can make it all happen. For the best results though, it’s important to use them from an early age.

The best essential oils for deep wrinkles I picked for this article are all unique. They can help the skin regenerate and keep it firm. Some of them can also boost collagen and elastin production.

Do you have a favorite among the essential oils for wrinkles I talked about? What kind of improvement have you noticed while using it?

  1. I read your article on deep wrinkles, and note that you choose rose, palmarosa, frankincense, and,Rosewood.
You gave recipe for deep wrinkles around the mouth using palmarosa, frankincense, rose and to rosehip seed oil.
Curious. Can I use those same amount of drops but with just one of the oils to see if it works? Can I use Argan oil since I have mature dry skin? I have Frankincense in a CO2 version, and I thought I could try that with Argan and see? What is your opinion?
I have, really stubborn lines on upper lip due to years of smoking, and I might only be able to diminish them a little, but I sure would like to try.
    Please advise.
    Thank you,
    Tracy

    1. Hi Tracy,

You can use Argan oil and just one essential oil (same amount of drops), if you want to.
Both Frankincense and Argan are very good anti-aging ingredients.

      1. Thank you Laura. I also see that Rosehip seed oil is really good on wrinkles. Do you have a preference to either Argan or Rosehip seed oil? And while I am at it, and since you were nice enough to get back to me, do you feel frankincense is my best bet? I know it is your opinion, but just tryi g my best here. I read so Mich on Frankincense, and since I have the CO2 version, which is supposed to be superior to steam distillation. Thanks again for helping me. TRACY

        1. I would not necessarily choose between Argan and Rosehip, Tracy. I like them both so I’d alternate between them.
As for the CO2 Frankincense, it is indeed superior and really good for wrinkles and could help yours too. You can learn more about it in my article on Frankincense oil for wrinkles.
