Coconut oil is a carrier oil full of essential fatty acids that nourish on a deep level. It absorbs really well into the skin and hair.

In fact, Coconut is among the few oils that penetrate very deep, inside the hair shaft. It can do so because it has a low molecular weight.

Its main fatty acid is Lauric acid. This acid has a high affinity for hair proteins, meaning it likes and combines with them very well. Because of this affinity, Coconut oil for eyelashes can prevent the protein loss, before and after washing.

This fatty acid also has antifungal and antibacterial properties. They make the oil great at protecting against viruses and bacteria that live on the surface of the skin.

The oil can strengthen the lashes, thus preventing breakage and loss. Want to use Coconut oil for eyelash growth? You can do so, every night for a few months before enjoying the benefits.

Daily stimulation and brushing with Coconut oil and a very gentle massage on the eyelids can increase the blood circulation.

A better circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the hair roots and boosts its growth. The use of Coconut oil on eyelashes can improve their whole appearance.

Coconut Oil for Eyelashes

How to Use Coconut Oil for Eyelash Growth and Conditioning

The oil of Coconut has a very pleasant, nutty and exotic scent. It suffices to just hear the name and your mind instantly travels to a sunny beach. It is a non-toxic and easy to use oil.

Coconut is solid at room temperature (below 25C/77F) but it melts right away when you touch it/apply it to the skin.

The oil can be used as it is on eyelashes, every night and day, as long as you don’t apply makeup. That’s why the best time to use Coconut oil for eyelashes is at night, before bed. That’s when the tissue regenerates better, as most other activities are slowed down.

Also, the lack of pollution and stress helps the oil absorb fully and boost its growth. So, using Coconut oil before bed should be a must, whether it’s on the eyelashes, on the body, feet, etc.

I don’t recommend using Coconut oil on oily or combination complexion though. It is a comedogenic oil. It has a level of 4 out of 5 on the comedogenicity scale. This means it can clog the pores and cause acne breakouts.

Coconut oil for eyelash growth or conditioning can be used as eye makeup remover. In fact, you can start your skin care routine by wiping out makeup residue with a bit of Coconut oil on a cotton pad.

You can then continue by applying a small amount on your lashes and eyelids. Use only gentle movements to stimulate the circulation.

You can also make a blend of Coconut oil and other eyelash growth oils to maintain it fluid. This way you can pour it in an empty and clean mascara recipient and brush your lashes with more ease.

Once you prepare the blend, it’s not an extra effort to add this step to your daily beauty routine.

5 of the Best Coconut Oil Eyelash Recipes

Natural eyelash growth remedies are a great alternative to all the commercial products we find. They can help your eyelashes get more volume, become stronger and thicker, and grow a bit longer.

The following recipes contain natural ingredients like Coconut oil, Castor oil, vitamin E, and others. They are very good on their own, but when they’re combined, the results are even better.

1) Simple Eyelash Conditioning Recipe

You’ll need:

  • Coconut oil: 1 Oz (30ml)
  • Vitamin E: 7 drops/capsules
  • Carrot juice: 1 teaspoon

Keep the Coconut oil recipient (with the lid on) in some hot water until it melts and becomes fluid. Take the specified amount and mix it with the vitamin and the carrot juice.

Shake the blend well before use and apply a tiny amount on your eyelashes, with a clean mascara brush. But only after you’ve removed all traces of makeup, of course.

Brush your lashes with the Coconut mix, from the roots to the ends. The small amount is to make sure you don’t get any in your eyes. That will sting and irritate.

2) Eyelash Growth Serum Recipe with Coconut Oil

You’ll need:

  • Coconut oil: 13 ml
  • Cera bellina wax: 2 ½ teaspoons (1.25 ml)
  • Lanolin (vegetable): 1 teaspoon (0.5 ml)
  • Coconut acid (or Coco Fatty Acid): 1.7 ml

Melt the wax with the coconut acid on a double boiler. Add the Coconut oil and lanolin, little by little. Mix really well after each drop. Add the mixture to a desired clean recipient of 1 Oz or a larger mascara tube.

Let this Coconut oil eyelash growth recipe stand at room temperature for the night before using it.

Cera bellina is a beeswax derivative that improves the oil retention. It also gives a gel-like aspect to your blend and helps the other ingredients blend well together.

The vegetable lanolin is a great moisturizer. It retains water within the hair cuticle and skin. Vegetable lanolin stabilizes the blend and absorbs more water into the hair. It also has some waterproof properties.

The Coconut acid (coco-caprylate) is a mixture of fatty acids. They’re extracted from the Coconut oil. This acid is highly emollient and gives a non-greasy sensation. It is often used in “oil-free” serums and creams because it’s a great skin and hair conditioning agent.

3) Growing Eyelashes with Coconut oil Recipe

You’ll need:

  • Coconut oil: 1 tsp.
  • Castor oil: ½ tsp.
  • Emu oil: 1 tsp.
  • Vitamin E: 2 drops (capsules)

Add each ingredient, one by one directly into a recipient with a dropper (or a clean and empty mascara tube). Shake it well before each use. Apply only a drop per each eye and massage it gently into the eyelids.

Use a brush to separate and coat each lash. Clean your eyes with a gentle cleanser before and after the use of this blend.

4) Coconut Milk and Oil Eyelash Growth Recipe

You’ll need:

  • Coconut oil: 3 drops
  • Coconut milk: 25 ml
  • Liquid biotin: 1 drop
  • Tara gum: 0.18 ml
  • Psyllium: 0.6 ml
  • Arabic (Acacia) gum: 0.03 ml
  • Grapefruit seed extract (preservative): 3 drops

Unfortunately, this recipe requires a little electronic scale. The one that’s usually used for food measurements should work well.

The blending is simple: add everything, one by one, in a clean recipient and shake well before use. Let it thicken for half an hour. You can then apply it on your clean eyelashes. This Coconut milk recipe can help your eyelashes grow.

Coconut Oil for Eyelashes, Coconut Milk

Coconut Oil vs. Coconut Milk vs. Coconut Water

They are 3 different products. The oil is extracted by cold pressure from the fatty pulp of the coconut. The milk is obtained while grating the coconuts. The coconut water is the clear liquid found inside the green nut.

Coconut milk is watery and contains many vitamins and minerals the oil doesn’t. Water-based vitamins like C and B, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, sodium, etc. It is also lactose-free.

Coconut milk works well blended with Coconut oil, though they don’t mix perfectly. It can condition the eyelashes and feed the hair cuticles all the necessary nutrients they need to boost hair growth.

The liquid biotin is a B vitamin derivative, which is very good for hair and nails. All the gums in this recipe are there to stabilize the blend. They help the milk mix with the oily ingredients, and still remain viscous.

They’re all natural and contain some beneficial nutrients as well. The addition of Coconut oil for eyelashes in this recipe is less because the milk is also great for eyelashes.

5) 3-Oil Eyelash Conditioning and Growth Recipe

You’ll need:

  • Coconut oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Olive oil: 1 teaspoon
  • Castor oil: 1 teaspoon

Mix and shake this blend really well before each application. Keep at it each night, brushing a tiny amount on your clean eyelashes. All the ingredients are great at boosting hair growth. They also protect from infections and inflammations and nourish the lashes from inside.

How Long Does It Take to Grow Eyelashes with Coconut Oil?

Tips and Good Practices

Everybody wants to know how long it takes until noticeable results start to show. And it’s important to know the real answer in advance, so you know what to expect.

Without my current knowledge on how hair and eyelashes grow, I used to start various treatments and give up after a few weeks. It was because I had high hopes and uninformed expectations. Thus, it was easier to shift my attention elsewhere and stop the treatment.

I want to explain a bit more about the way eyelashes grow. That’ll help you understand how Coconut oil can help with growth and what to expect.

Eyelashes are similar to scalp hair. They are coarser, longer and darker because they’re considered terminal hairs (like scalp hair).

Coconut Oil for Eyelashes

Physical traits of eyelashes:
  • They are wider and thicker than scalp hair.
  • They don’t gray over time because they don’t usually lose their pigment (melanin).
  • Eyelashes don’t have arrector pili They are tiny muscles attached to hair follicles. When they contract, these tiny muscles make the hairs stand. You know this phenomenon as goose bumps.
  • Eyelashes are not influenced by androgen hormones. These androgens stimulate hair growth in puberty and inhibit it later in life.
  • Each person is born with a certain number of eyelash follicles (100 – 150 per upper eyelid).
  • This number never increases.

Hair has a cycle with three phases. This cycle’s length varies according to body location. The length of an eyelash cycle is estimated somewhere between 5 and 11 months.

The three phases of an eyelash cycle is the same as scalp hair cycle.

  • Anagen is the growth phase and it may last from 1 to 2 months. This phase impacts the length of the lashes.
  • Catagen is a transition phase where the hair follicles go through cell death. The catagen phase lasts about 15 days.
  • Telogen is the longest phase and it’s the phase where the eyelashes rest. This may last anywhere between 4 and 9 months. Nothing significant happens during this phase.

All this information can help you understand why your eyelashes might not grow as you’d like them to. Starting your treatment during the resting phase, you may have to wait a very long time until eyelashes start growing.

Nonetheless, when the anagen phase begins and you’re using Coconut oil for eyelashes, you can help them grow faster and longer. The length of eyelashes is genetic, but the use of Coconut oil can help them grow to their maximum.

Each woman will find herself in a different eyelash cycle phase. That will impact the amount of time needed to see improvement while using Coconut oil for eyelash growth. But in time, you will still see your lashes become softer, stronger and with more luster.

This is why there are so many different time periods in which women have seen their eyelashes grow while using Coconut oil.

Depending on the phase your eyelashes are when you begin, it may take anywhere between a few weeks to 9 months.

Patience is mandatory when starting an eyelash growth remedy. But, just as you apply moisturizer every night, you can also brush your eyelashes a few times. It won’t take that much of your time.

Another important note with regards to the rhythm of growth of eyelashes is that it is very slow. Eyelashes are known to be growing at a rate of approximately 0.15 mm/day (0.17 inches). Scalp hair grows double on a day.

Coconut Oil for Eyelashes

Safe Use of Coconut Oil on Eyelashes

It’s important to know a bit about the possible dangers that the oil may have if mishandled. Coconut is a non-toxic and non-irritant oil. When applied to the skin, it is usually very well tolerated.

  • Nonetheless, being extracted from a nut, it may still cause allergies to some people. Test it on a small area before widespread use. Massage a small amount on the inside of the forearm and watch it for a few hours for any negative reactions.

  • The oil of Coconut is also comedogenic, so try to avoid using it on your complexion if it’s oily or combination. It should be ok to use on the skin around the eyes though.

  • Do not use Coconut oil for eyelashes if it’s gone rancid or passed its expiration date. The oil should last at least 1 year and 3 years if it’s kept in a dark, cool and dry place.

  • Make sure you use small amounts of Coconut on your lashes. If it goes in, it can irritate the eyes and cause temporary blurred vision. Wipe any excess off with a clean cotton pad.

A Few Good Practices

In order for any natural remedy to work, you should know and do a few things.

  • Remove your eye makeup every night. Use gentle movements and cleansers to avoid irritating the eyes and eyelids. Makeup residue may weigh down on the eyelashes and cause them to break or fall.

  • Try not to scratch and rub your eyes like crazy. Better put some chamomile tea bags on them to stop the itchiness and irritation.

  • Always use quality and within term eye makeup.

  • Brush your eyelashes with a clean mascara brush daily. They need to breathe. All the more better if you add some Coconut oil for eyelash growth as well.

  • Take regular breaks from using mascara.

  • Avoid using eyelash curlers. They often pull the lashes out or even cut them.

  • Use gentle movements when dealing with eyelashes. They’re very fragile and can fall easily.

That being said, I will now conclude the article hoping it was helpful and informative enough. You can go ahead and grow your eyelashes stronger and longer, and with more volume too.

Conclusion

The best thing about Coconut oil is that it is so very easy to use on just about everything. From skin, nails and hair to treating even more serious conditions like Keratosis Pilaris.

The use of Coconut oil for eyelashes can be very beneficial if you keep at it. The results are often impressive and worth every week you’ve waited and almost lost any hope.

Are you tempted to try it now that you know so much more? Does it help to know what to expect? I’m looking forward to your comments and input from your own experience.
