Cardamom Essential Oil against Nausea

We all know the sensation of nausea. We all know it to be very uneasy and uncomfortable, to say the least. Some people may also panic when they sense it. Regardless, there are many causes for nausea to be triggered, but the good news is that it is not a condition.

It is rather simply a sensation, no matter how uncomfortable it is. This sensation may sometimes find relief in vomiting, though it’s not a rule of course.

What happens to your body when you feel nauseated?

It all starts with the brain. There are two centers there that intercept and respond to trigger factors.

One is the CTZ – Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone. It can be stimulated by medication and also hormones. The CTZ, once it intercepts the signals from the trigger factors, it will send them further on to the digestive system.

The second center is called area postrema, and it controls the vomiting sensations. It also plays an important role in the management of the nervous system functions. This center is responsible for intercepting changes in the equilibrium or pressure.

These last two make a person feel off balance. Nausea is the sign that your body can’t deal with those changes. It sends signals so you can start doing something about it. Motion sickness usually triggers this second center.

Cardamom Essential Oil

One of the best methods to prevent or control motion nausea is to simply focus on a very distant point. Look at it and take deep breaths of fresh air, at least until you start feeling better. Inhaling Cardamom oil at the same time can help speed up the process.

Both brain centers register these changes as potential harmful bodies. They send the necessary signals to the proper organs and then they create a reaction. Nausea is that reaction.

Can Cardamom essential oil help stop nausea?

This aromatic essence is a great stimulant. It can stimulate the whole digestive system and the nervous system. By doing that, not only does it calm the upset stomach, but it also boosts your mood. The aroma of the oil is warming, yet spicy and fresh, which makes it pleasant to inhale and uplifting.

Cardamom oil has important antispasmodic and antibacterial properties. They will help calming the GI tract’s spasms. They will also help relieve tension and killing viruses and bad bacteria in the gut.

Cardamom is part of the same plant family as ginger. Because of that, our essential oil is great for stopping nausea, if it can’t be prevented.

Nausea Stop! Blend

You’ll need:

  • Cardamom essential oil: 12 drops
  • Ginger essential oil: 10 drops
  • Grapefruit essential oil: 18 drops
  • Light carrier oil: 1 Oz (30 ml)
  • Roller bottle

Shake this blend well each time before use. Keep it stored in a dark, dry and cool place, preferably in the fridge. Apply on your wrists a moderate amount and inhale deeply for 5 – 10 minutes every time you feel nauseated. Sit down somewhere and relax, allowing your body and mind to calm down.

Can nausea be prevented?

Most of the times, you might be able to stop or prevent it before vomiting. Spitting out the excess saliva that usually precedes vomiting is a good thing to do. However, if we’re talking about food or alcohol poisoning, then vomiting could be the best solution.

The body needs to get rid of those toxins right away, and you would simply do it a favor. But, as I was saying, nausea is just a sensation that can be controlled in a natural manner.

You probably know you get carsick or that your stomach is sensitive to foods in general. If that’s the case, you should always keep a Cardamom blend with you. Massage your temples and wrists with it. Inhale deeply for at least 5 minutes, every time before or during a trip or after a meal.

  • Cardamom essential oil: 8 drops
  • Peppermint essential oil: 10 drops
  • Lemon essential oil: 12 drops
  • Sweet Almond or Coconut oil: 1 Oz (30ml)
  • Roll on bottle

Mix all these ingredients well and shake the blend every time before use. The oils mix and stay that way, but a bit of stirring will activate their molecules faster. You can keep this blend in a purse or backpack with you. If you want to be able to take it on a plane, simply make a smaller batch (say 10 ml instead of 30).

Cardamom Essential Oil for a Good Oral Hygiene

Regardless of what some might say, the first impression will always count. A good oral hygiene will maintain your overall health and your teeth clean. Thus, from a social point of view, a broad smile can be helpful.

It can lighten up the atmosphere and help you make friends more easily, for instance. And who doesn’t want whiter teeth and a clean and refreshed mouth?!

The mouth is the perfect environment for bacteria and germs to thrive. That’s how they can reach your blood and organs and cause all sorts of inflammations. But they’ll not get there without causing plaque and caries first. All these problems put together can lead to a bad breath.

Luckily, Cardamom essential oil has a wonderful fragrance that can freshen up your breath in an instant. But the most important quality of this oil is its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Oil pulling is a very efficient way of keeping the mouth disinfected, with a pleasant smell to it too.

Because in its chemical profile there’s also 1, 8 cineole (Eucalyptol), the oil can be analgesic too. This means it can numb the pain of a swollen gum or nerve damage.

How to Use the Oil of Cardamom for a Good Oral Hygiene

1)  One of the simplest methods is of course, the oil pulling method. For that, you need an organic carrier oil and some Cardamom essential oil.

In a tablespoon of Olive oil add 2 drops of Cardamom EO, stir and then swish it in your mouth. Now, the longer you can keep it swishing (without swallowing), the better.

Most Aromatherapists recommend 15 – 20 minutes of swishing, but I find it impossible. If you’re a patient human being, like I’m not, then it shouldn’t be that much of a problem.

Nonetheless, even 5 minutes of swishing are more than helpful. It is enough time to make sure the molecules of the essential oil have covered all the tissue and teeth. Just remember to never ingest this solution as it will be full of toxins!

2) Another simple method is to simply dab some oil on a cotton swab and place it directly on the inflammation or tooth carry.

3) Next, you could blend the oil of Cardamom with carrier oil and massage your gums with it each day. That’ll strengthen them and prevent infection and inflammations.

4) Finally, you can make your own mouth water with the oil and use it daily. Or you could add a drop onto your regular toothpaste and use normally.

Cardamom essential oil is a great alternative to chewing gum. And it’s natural too! I’ve talked to you about its antibacterial properties.

But beside them, the taste and fragrance of the cardamom can stimulate the production of saliva. That plus the outer coat of the seeds, which have a fibrous texture, can help in a very thorough teeth cleansing.

Usually, one chews gum to clean their teeth and refresh their breath. But chewing gum can affect in a negative way the digestion process. Chewing cardamom seeds can have all the benefits of a chewing gum.

But, instead of being a nuisance and harming the digestion, it can actually boost it. The oils from the seeds can help decompose the food better by stimulating the gastric juices and the bile.

Chewing cardamom seeds can also help people who want to give up smoking. How? Apparently, the flavor of the cardamom and vanilla can make nicotine withdrawal symptoms easier. It may lessen their frequency so it becomes easier to cope with the withdrawal.

So, why go through the trouble of buying and chewing gum, when you can turn to a more natural solution? Of course, this is a good idea and solution if you’re a fan of natural, holistic living. Even if you aren’t (yet?), there are some pretty obvious advantages to using Cardamom essential oil and seeds.

A Few Words about Cardamom Oil

The oil you’ll be looking for must bear the botanical name of Elettaria cardamomum. Cardamom is a spice with a long history, and one of its popular names is the “Queen of spices”.

It used to be highly regarded and used as a medicinal plant for 3000 years. It was used against poisonous bites quite often.

The seeds of the plant are steam distilled to extract Cardamom essential oil. This aromatic essence thrives in very warm places like India and Middle East. But it can also be found in Sri Lanka and North Africa.

Generally speaking, the oil is safe to use in small quantities and always diluted. However, there are certain conditions under which you should consider asking your doctor’s advice first. These conditions may be:

  • Pregnancy.
  • Nursing.
  • Cardiac problems.
  • Hepatic problems.

Young children should not use this oil either!

Another good observation would be to avoid using the oil of Cardamom for long periods of time. French Aromatherapists recommend its use for only 5 continuous days.

You can then take a break and use a different oil or blend in the meantime. After a week’s break, you can continue using Cardamom oil.

Conclusion

A bottle of a very pleasant and useful essential oil is always welcome in any home. It is especially welcome when it can deal with digestive problems, nausea, oral hygiene and even beauty. The aromatic oil extracted from Cardamom seeds can help you face many health conditions.

It can prevent some of them and delay a more serious result in other cases. More serious problems could always arise if a tooth carry is left untreated, for example. But, as you’ve seen, the oil can actually keep the bacteria in check and soothe most types of inflammations.

Cardamom essential oil may be one of your best natural allies. It can help you prevent or soothe minor health conditions or sensations.

Use it in small amounts and, if you don’t have any of the health problems described, you could reap a lot of benefits in a short time.

What do you think about this oil? Have you ever tried it in Aromatherapy, cooking or beauty? Were the results satisfying? Please share so we can all add more knowledge to the use of this wonderful spice.
